Are Thyroid Patients Getting the COVID-19 Vaccine?
An informal poll of nearly 900 thyroid patients looks at how many thyroid patients plan to get vaccinated against COVID-19, and the concerns they have about the vaccine.
Many thyroid patients have reached out to me to ask if I’m getting a COVID-19 vaccine, and if they should as well. I wanted to gauge where thyroid patients are at this point, mid-January 2021, so I conducted an informal online poll, getting responses from almost 900 thyroid patients.
My key objective was to get a fix on what percentage of thyroid patients were planning to get a COVID vaccine when it's available, and if not, their reasons.
First, I asked the respondents their diagnosis. About half have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, 39% are hypothyroid from other causes (i.e., after RAI or surgery), and the rest have Graves' disease, thyroid cancer, and other thyroid issues.
Here’s what they have to say about the COVID-19 vaccine.
Will You Get the COVID-19 Vaccine?
Almost 56% of respondents said yes, they’ll get the vaccine.
Almost 25% of respondents said no.
About 13% of respondents said they are unsure about whether they're getting the vaccine.
And the remaining 6% said that they will get the vaccination, but are waiting until later.
If You’re Getting the Vaccine, Do You Still Have Any Concerns?
Among those who plan to get the vaccine, there are still concerns, however. (Respondents could select more than one concern.)
55% are worried that it's not yet been tested with autoimmune patients
47% are worried about the vaccine side effects
29% are worried that it may not work as promised
24% are worried that it's not safe or tested
If You’re NOT Getting the Vaccine, What Are Your Reasons?
Those who do not plan to get the vaccine had a number of reasons. (Respondents could select more than one concern.)
53% are worried about the effect on other health conditions
50% feel that the vaccine is too new
41% are worried about the general side effects
33% don't trust this vaccine and/or vaccines in general
31% cite other health reasons (immunosuppressed, vaccine allergies, etc.)

Are Thyroid Patients Getting the COVID-19 Vaccine?
I have absolutely no intention of getting this vaccine. Take care of your immune system. It usually takes 5-10years to develop a vaccine. That includes testing, and it’s still dangerous to so many of us with autoimmune disorders.
I plan on getting the vaccine, I feel it is no different than getting the flu shot or phnemonia shot. My only real concern is what is in it due to chemical allergies. In my state I fall into category 1C so it will be awhile before I can get it.
